Slate Roofing Systems
Slate is a dense, durable rock that is practically non-absorbent, and it comes in a variety of sizes, thicknesses and colors. Exposure to the elements causes all slate to change color. Slate which exhibits minimal color change is called “unfading” slates. Others take on a more obvious color change, and these are known as “semi-weathering” or “weathering” slates. Depending on the quality, slate roofs can last anywhere from 50 to 400 years, and they are very low maintenance as well.
Using a pair of binoculars, you can safely inspect your roof from the ground for any missing or broken slates. It is also a good idea to have an experienced roofer (also called a slater), such as A.D. Willis Company, to survey your roof every couple of years to expose any less obvious problems, and then make the necessary repairs.
